Scene from a late Heian period illustrated scroll. In the foreground, a monkey dressed in clerical garb venerates a frog posing as a Buddha image. Behind the monkey a fox and rabbit read sutras, and a cat, fox, and monkey in clerical garb appear in the background. The images on the scroll are a satirical critique of the alleged corruption of the established forms of Buddhism. The foxes in particular are noteworthy. In Japan (and China) the fox is a notorious trickster, often appearing in human guise to cause trouble.
