The left half of this Chinese depiction shows the six courses arranged as a hierarchy. At the top is enlightened beings, with humans (albeit with 4 arms) below. In descending order, the remaining courses are animals, noxious animals, starving ghosts, and hell. The assigning of the deceased to rebirth in the appropriate realm is the final stage in a post-death judgment process that goes through ten different courtrooms (the previous one is depicted in the right half of the picture). Not all of the courtrooms were of equal importance, however, so the final one typically received the most attention from artists.
