Shoen were legally created special parcels of land, usually centered on agriculture, which included buildings (houses, temples, storehouses, etc), waterways (usually), as well as surrounding forest lands (the major source of fuel and building materials). Shoen were well documented, and part of their documentation was a detailed map of the property such as the one shown here.
