A poster for Sayonara, late 1950s. The poster and the film it promotes rely heavily on the lurid appeal of inter-racial sex in the Orient, but such relations are not portrayed here as especially sinful or sinister. Although it relies on many classic stereotypes, this film was an early attempt by Hollywood to suggest that the racial divide might not be so absolute. Interestingly, the film is still being sold by educational video outlets as a useful tool in studying Japan (gag)!
