Poster (ca. 1940) commemorating the alleged founding of the Japanese nation in ancient (indeed, mythical) times by the emperor Jinmu. The shadowy figures in this image are all in the costume of ancient, pre-historic warriors (or at least what we think was their costume). Notice the Olympic-style torch (or so it appears) in the right hand of the figure on the right foreground--a nice modern touch. Especially effective is the way the graphic represents continuity from the ancient past to the present by the gray-scale rings of clouds (?) that fade off into a point in the bottom center of the image. The whole image is a superb illustration of one of the fundamental lies that most modern nations must tell: that they are of ancient vintage.
