As photos such as this one of Japanese soldiers guarding a Russian POW began to circulate around the world, many Europeans and Americans began to worry about Japan's "unnatural" victory. After all, the logic of the time went, Japan is an "Oriental" country populated by "yellow" people. And even though Russians might not be quite as "white" as, say, Parisians, and even though they practice a strange form of Christianity, surely they could easily have defeated Japan had they really tried to do so . . . or. . . perhaps. . . .???. . . no . . . surely not . . . .
