Bodies in the streets of Shanghai, 1926. Until 1926, the GMD and the CCP cooperated in unifying China--or at least trying to do so. But at that point, Jiang decided that the CCP was more of a potential threat to his rule than a useful ally, and, in cooperation with the Green Gang, arranged an ambush of CCP forces massing in Shganghai. To be on the safe side, he also slaughtered their families and anyone nearby who might appear to be a sympathizer. The goal was to eliminate the CCP in this one bloody event, but enough of its members and leaders escaped to regroup and carry on.
