These two mid-Tokugawa vintage erotic prints are excellent examples of the lack of emphasis on secondary sexual characteristics. In both cases the faces are next to each other, but both sets are drawn according to a generic unisex template. Even the hair styles, while different, look quite similar. The same goes for the clothing. The major marker of sexual difference is the primary sexual characteristics, which are exaggerated to an unrealistic degree in these prints (and in many others of this genre).
