Harunobu, Smelling the Plum Fragrance. Here a young man bends down a blooming plum branch for the young woman to smell. Notice a few things:
1. the sharp contrast between the while plum flowers (yang) and the dark of night (yin)--soon to be united?
2. The flowing water connecting both people;
3. The widely opened robes of the young man
And then there is the poem-in-the-clouds above. I am too tired to try and translated it precisely, but it likens the joining of the man's two hands to the branch with the aroma of the plum blossoms, under which the water flows. In short, it looks like there's going to be some excitement tonight.
