In premodern China, famous poets, especially famous male poets, had a general reputation for the vigorous pursuit of life's pleasures. This painting carries a strong erotic charge.
Compare with the two Japanese images we have seen of young men presenting plum blossoms to young women. The sense is roughly similar, though, of course, with the gender of the presenter being reversed.
