A depiction of Dutch traders in Nagasaki, ca. 1800 called "A Picture of the Red-Haired People Vigorously Enjoying Themselves." These Dutch visitors were exotic, of course. Many of them had had light-colored hair, they ate strange food, sat in chairs, wore odd-looking clothing, etc. But they are clearly 100% human, with no monster-like features. Such depictions were typical of the time. By the 1860s, however, their noses had started to grow longer.
