Oni resemble humans but are in fact powerful and usually dangerous beasts. A major theme of Japanese wartime propaganda was that the Anglo-American enemy put on the appearance of civilized human beings while enriching themselves from the blood of oppressed people through imperialism. The human appearance is but a mask.
