Map of Tokyo, 1871 |
After the overthrow of the Tokugawa shogunal government with the Meiji Restoration of 1868, the new leaders (mostly warriors from Satsuma and Chôshû domains) moved the young Meiji Emperor from the old imperial capital of Kyoto to grounds of Edo Castle, set up administrative offices in the surrounding ex-daimyô properties, and renamed the new capital "Tokyo" or "Eastern Capital" (in relation to Kyoto). One immediate result of this governmental change was a half-million drop in population since the alternate attendence system for the ex-daimyô was ended. During from the 1870s, however, the reconfigured city regained and surpassed its former population as modern urbanization and a capitalist economy took root. In this map we can see the former Edo Castle grounds labeled (upside down from this view) "Imperial Palace." Can you locate Nihonbashi, Ryôgoku Bridge, and the Yoshiwara? |
