Although a top-ranked onnagata, Iwai Hanshirô IV (aka Otafuku Hanshirô) ventured to play the epitome of masculine aragoto roles at the end of 1791, a warrior in a famous "Shibaraku" (Stop right there!) scene. His costume here is characteristic of such a role: red-streak sujiguma or "strength line" makeup, a "cartwheel" wig, black lacquer court headdress, white paper "strength" hair ornaments, and a persimmon ceremonial jacket over armor. What a man! |
