Playbill for Opening Day (Kaomise banzuke), 1780s

A playbill, much like this one for the opening day of the Kiri temporary theater, might have been what drew you to a particular theater. A single black-and-white sheet listing the actors and musicians working at a certain theater for the season, kaomise banzuke could be sent to special patrons or posted throughout the city at gathering spots such as intersections, restaurants, and public baths. At center top is this theater's curtain and emblem. Top-billed actors got their names in bolder print and had their likenesses drawn in the center of the sheet.
