Map of Yoshiwara, 1716

An aspiring tsû would never go to the pleasure quarter on a whim and unprepared. Tasteful attire, lots of cash, and knowing the who, what, and where of the quarter were a must. This map (not drawn to scale) marks teahouses, ageya, and the crest of each brothel with a list of the courtesans working there. By the mid-18th century one to two thousand women worked in the quarter and later up to six thousand were at times reported. Connoiseurs would also turn to yûjo hyôbanki, detailed "Who's Who" directories of courtesans and their attributes.

To orient yourself for your wanderings, first look at the Schematic Map for the general layout of the Yoshiwara. Then return to this map and seek out the seventeen scenes scattered throughout, or view them as a sequential tour by clicking on the arrows once you've entered the Great Gate. End by looking at Post-Edo Yoshiwara and then Exit under the dawn sky.
