We're on the second floor balcony of the Chôjiya in early summer. From left to right are named the three women Meizan, Karauta, and Hinazuru. When not working to meet the daily quota of appointments imposed on them by brothel proprietors, courtesans might find time to practice an accomplishment (Hinazuru is playing the tsuzumi, a small hand drum), read, birdwatch, play games, engage in other amusements, or simply rest--conservation of energy, as pointed out in the readings, was a vital skill for the rigorous schedules the women were forced to keep. |
