One prominent genre of misemono was unusual animals. This particular camel first arrived in Nagasaki in the June 1821, toured Osaka in the April 1823, and finally found itself on display on the west plaza of Ryôgoku from 9 August 1825. For 32 sen (a few cents) one could take a look at it. In 1863 this Indian elephant showed up on a Portugeuse ship in Yokohama and its Japanese owners promptly set up a booth for it in west Ryôgoku. The more extreme cases of rare animal displays included "freaks" of nature, typically albino or deformed animals and humans, as well as dwarfs and giants. |
