Pages of an Illustrated Program (ehon banzuke), 1780s

Upon entering a theater you might be tempted to purchase an illustrated program. These small booklets contained bits of plot narrative and dialogue along with illustrations of major scenes. This excerpt happens to be from a so-called "Shibaraku" (Just a Minute! Stop right there!) scene of a play during the kaomise performance in 1784 at the temporary Kiri theater. Developed as a dramatic set piece for the end of the third act of a kaomise performance of many plays, a Shibaraku scene involved the hero boldly entering the stage and shouting "Shibaraku!" just as villians were about to hatch a scheme. But you need not stop here; click on the figure that you think is the hero to get your seat in the theater.
