We are looking out from the room of a middle-ranking courtesan over the ricefields of Asakusa during the late fall Torinomachi Festival. According to Henry Smith's analysis of this print from the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo by the famous Hiroshige, details of the scene suggest that a client has just left after an afternoon visit. A stylish towel lies next to a mouth -rinsing bowl on the window sill while peeking out from behind a folding screen on the left edge is a set of hairpins--probably a gift from the client--and a stack of tissue paper know euphemistically as onko-togami, "paper for the honorable act."
