The Yoshiwara celebrated many set festivals throughout the year, including one--the Torinomachi Festival in the Eleventh Month--during which its three emergency gates were opened and any one, including ordinary women who were otherwise prohibited, could enter the grounds to catch rare a glimpse at a famous courtesans. They had a strong impact on fashion, setting trends in dress, hair styles, makeup, and accessories. |
