ParticipantI think innocence refers to the intention of the little girl. All the gory attacks that took place in the beginning of the file are actually the creation of the ghosts of little children that are kidnapped. The children controlled dolls to commit murder followed by suicide to render the message that they are in danger. But the way they rendered the message, in this case meaning murdering, caused lots of trouble. Therefore innocence could be referring to the children being unconscious about the panic they have brought by their activities. Also it is very interesting how Batou comments on it: ‘do you know how the people and the dolls feel?’ I guess he included dolls because he is actually regarding the dolls as part human since they committed suicide and had part of human souls in them. So he could also be implying that the dolls were innocent and that the whole murder was actually the product of human mind. So it is actually the human, which we can call puppet master, who committed the murders instead of the doll itself. Therefore the doll is innocent.

ParticipantOne way Oshii conveys “innocence” is the distinction of the natural and artificial and at the same time their convergence. Innocence, in a way, is purity. It’s like a clean, white sheet. It is nature. Losing innocence is the staining of the sheet, as how the world became saturated by technology. Human society is no longer “innocent” because it has integrated technology into the bodies, sometimes a full replacement of organic parts.
Human society is shown trying to return to a state of innocence – a lot of the architecture is of older eras, cars are designed to mimic those of the 1900s, and various other vehicles are shaped like animals. Kim has become a doll himself as he want to obtain this innocence. He likens dolls with animals, being supreme entities because of a lack of consciousness. His implication is that the trait of humanity is what taints what should be pure.

KeymasterI’m posting this as a test. Apparently there has been some issues. Must be the Puppet Master messing with us….

ParticipantI think “Innocence” might literally be referring to the young girls’ souls within the gynoids. It is the souls of the young girls that makes these robots doll-like, gives them human qualities and consciousness. The innocent, ignorant girls were somehow being manipulated into letting their souls be “borrowed”…and in a way, the dolls were innocent, too. Whose consciousness is truly controlling their actions? Neither the gynoids nor the young girls seemed to have wanted to be a part in this. What about the fact that the gynoids were starting to commit suicide, and the first gynoid that we see even says, “Help us…”. That is a clear indication of the lack of control both the dolls and the girls have in their situations. Both parties are “innocent” in a way.

ParticipantI totally agree with Brandon. Innocence, in GITS, means purity. In Kim’s discussion of innocent, or ideal, beings, he comments that dolls, animals and gods are only life forms that can attain “innocence.” Dolls and animals lack the sense of self (dolls exist for the sake of being manipulated, while animals, exemplified by Batou’s dog, in the movie are described as devoid of self-consciousness). Thus, their want of consciousness determines their purity, for they can reach the level of pure objectivity. While, gods, characterized by infinite consciousness, are innocent, for they are devoid of substantial body, and they attain the pure spiritual form that helps them attain innocence.
The innocence of dolls can be justified by the truth of gynoid’s berserk: the robots go crazy simply because of a girl’s willingness to survive. The gynoids are merely instruments for the girl to broadcast her signal. From this perspective, the dolls are innocent. Also the innocence of god can be proved by Kunasagi in this movie: she is in the form of data, and incorporates herself with the internet. To some extent, she reaches the level of god for she transcends human’s limit of death, and abandons the material form of people. Her purity expressed by her spiritual form conveys her innocence and the essence of gods. -
