History 205: Play and Pleasure in Early Modern Japan

PopSites

The three "PopSites" in the course are opportunities for you to explore aspects of Edo popular culture—the carnivals and exhibitions at Ryôgoku Bridge, the Kabuki theater, and the Yoshiwara pleasure quarters—through visual material and accompanying text. They are designed to complement, not replace, readings. In the spirit of the culture of play in Edo, the navigation through each PopSite is purposefully meandering and playful (you might think it obscure and frustrating). Each PopSite has attached to it a short response writing, dubbed a "PopThought" just for the fun of it. To complete the PopThought you will need to interact with and reflect over the PopSite and relevant readings.

PopSite 1: Roaming Ryôgoku

PopSite 2: A Day at the Kabuki

PopSite 3: A Night in the Yoshiwara
